The Latin for chocolate is Theobroma Cacoa which means ‘Food of the Gods’- and who could argue? Chocolate tastes amazing and makes us happy in so many ways. It is the ultimate comfort food - our go to treat when times are tough - boosting our mood and inducing romance. But, did you also know that chocolate can help us medically! The nutritionists behind Train and Chew reveal that, because of all of its amazing properties, chocolate has been classified as a super food, and an amazing one at that - making the other so-called super foods pale in comparison.
Just in case you need another excuse to eat chocolate, here are 3 more reasons why you should follow my lead and eat chocolate every day!
1. Chocolate makes you eat less, and can help you lose weight! Yes really. Research has found that by eating one small square of high quality dark chocolate 20 minutes before you sit down to eat a meal can help to reduce your appetite. This is because the chocolate causes ‘fullness’ hormones to be released in the brain which say ‘I’m full’. As a result, you will eat less food and therefore consume fewer calories. Why not treat yourself to a square of chocolate before dinner today?
2. Eating good quality dark chocolate regularly can help to keep your cardiovascular system healthy. This is thought to be the result of the chocolate antioxidants and polyphenols boosting levels of good HDL cholesterol in the blood, reducing blood pressure and helping to improve insulin sensitivity. Do your heart the world of good and get yourself a square of the dark stuff!
3. Chocolate can help us stay young. Honestly! Research has found that the antioxidants in cacao can help our cells to regenerate, and can promote production of mitochondria- the power houses of our cells. By increasing mitochondria production, our exercise performance can improve and we will get tired less quickly when training, so we will be able to reach our goals more easily, and get fit faster! Great news for our summer body exploits.
But, before you stock up on Dairy Milk, Twix and Bounty, and start adding them to your smoothie bowls in an attempt to boost your super food intake - we are not talking about junk chocolate in this article! We are talking about the deviliciously dark, 85% or more kind of chocolate. It is this dark chocolate- which you must ensure contains little to no sugar- that has the awesomely high levels of theobromine - the molecule responsible for most of chocolates positive benefits. And, just in case you were wondering, sweetened dark chocolate does not have the same effects because the sugar reverses the benefits of the antioxidants.
But don’t worry, dark chocolate still tastes amazing! And now you have 3 more reasons not to resist it.
